Dodgers activate Jason Heyward, recall Miguel Vargas and Ricky Vanasco

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder Jason Heyward from the injured list, recalled outfielder Miguel Vargas and right-handed pitcher Ricky Vanasco, optioned outfielder James Outman and left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez and placed infielder Max Muncy on the injured list with a right oblique strain.

Heyward, 34, was placed on the injured list on March 30 and missed 40 games. He made two rehab appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 0-for-6 with a walk. In four games with the Dodgers this season, he was 3-for-14 with two RBI. The five-time Gold Glover is in his second season with the Dodgers after hitting .269 with 15 homers and 40 RBI in 2023. He has been in the Major Leagues 14 seasons with Atlanta (2010-14), St. Louis (2015), Chicago-NL (2016-22) and Los Angeles (2023-24) and has amassed 174 homers and 683 RBI in 1,707 career games. He was originally drafted by the Braves with the 14th pick in the 2007 First Year Players Draft out of Henry County High School.

Vargas, 24, joins the Dodgers for the first time this season after appearing in 85 games for the team in 2023. He hit .195 with 15 doubles, four triples, seven homers and 32 RBI in 81 games last year. This season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he was batting .290 with 14 doubles, eight homers and 38 RBI in 38 games. The 2022 Branch Rickey Player of the Year has been in the minors five seasons, clubbing 67 homers and driving in 346 RBI in 508 games. He was originally signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on September 7, 2017 out La Habana, Cuba.

Vanasco, 25, made pitched two scoreless innings in his first stint with the team on April 15. He has made 13 appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, allowing seven runs in 13.0 innings with 16 strikeouts. He has been in the minor leagues seven seasons, posting a 10-15 record with a 3.54 ERA with 295 strikeouts in 221 innings. He was acquired by trade from the Texas Rangers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Luis Valdez on June 1, 2023.

Outman, 27, appeared in 36 games for the Dodgers this season, recording a .148 batting average with three homers and 10 RBI. Last season, he finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting after clubbing 23 homers and driving in 70 as the primary centerfielder of the Dodgers. He is in his third season with the Dodgers and has hit a combined .235 with 27 homers and 83 RBI in 191 games. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the seventh round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Sacramento State University.

Ramirez, 34, pitched 2.1 innings last night, allowing three runs on five hits. He has pitched in six games this season with Los Angeles, allowing four runs in 9.1 innings. The Southern California native has been in the Major Leagues parts of five seasons with Detroit (2019-20), San Diego (2021), New York-AL (2023) and Los Angeles-NL (2024), going a combined 7-7 with a 4.03 ERA in 102 games. He was originally a fourth-round selection in the 2011 First Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Cal State Fullerton.

Muncy, 33, heads to the injured list for the first time this season. He is hitting .223 on the season with nine homers and 28 RBI. The Texas native has been with the Dodgers seven seasons, slashing .230/.354/.486 with 184 homers and 500 RBI in 791 games. He began his Major League career in 2015 with the Oakland Athletics and has clubbed 189 homers in 887 career Major League games. He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the fifth round of the 2012 First Year Player Draft out of Baylor University.
